Mo4-L6b: What are the Types of Adaptation?

Let’s Begin The ability of an organism to keep its internal
conditions within certain limits is homeostasis.
        How Adaptations Occur
Sweating on a hot day is an adaptation that helps

        that occur naturally in populations.
All species have adaptations to help them survive
The selection and breeding of organisms with temporary changes in their environments.
        desired traits is selective breeding.

        Types of Adaptations
Adaptations enable species to maintain homeostasis,
avoid predators, find and eat food, and move. Camouflage is an adaptation that enables a species
to blend in with its environment.
There are three main categories of adaptations:
        1. Structural
        2. Behavioral
        3. Functional

                                              Types of Adaptations

         Type of Adaptation Description Example

The color and shape of some
A physical trait, such as color, shape, or internal
Structural structure, that increases survival insect’s eyes are structural
                                                                                    adaptations.

A behavior or action, such as hibernating, The color and shape of some
migration, hunting at night, or playing dead, that insect’s eyes are structural
              Behavioral
                                           increases survival adaptations.

A biochemical change, such as hibernating,
shedding, or spitting, that enables a species to Spraying venom, as a cobra does,
              Functional is a functional adaptation.
                                increase survival or maintain homeostasis
