Order of Operations
All the same and are called grouping symbols: Remember to read
your instrucions!
Brackets: [ ] These all mean multiply:
Parenthesis: ( ) 3 x 3 3 . 3 3(3) Write an expression 14 + 1
Braces: { } Your answer will be an expression 26 ÷ 2
Work grouping symbols from the inside out Evaluate an expression 15
Your answer will be a value 13
9 - [4(3+2)] = 9 – [4(5)] = 9 - 20
Sometimes it will ask you to write and then
evaluate so you must do both!
Let’s Begin
Evaluate Expressions
Examples
Find the value of 24 ÷ 8 × 3. Find the value of 5(4 + 6) – 7 7.
24 ÷ 8 x 3 = 3 x 3 Divide 24 by 8 5(4 + 6) - 7 7 = 5(10)-7 7 Evaluate (4 + 6).
= 9 Multiply 3 and 3. = 50 - 7 7 5(10) means 5 × 10.
= 50 - 49 7 7 means 7 times 7.
= 1 Subtract 49 from 50.
Answer 9 Answer 1
Find the value of 3[(18 – 6) + 2(4)]. Find the value of 49 + 31
19 - 14
3[(18-6)+2(4)] = 3[12+2(4)] Evaluate (18 – 6). 49 + 31 = (49+31) ÷ (19-14) Rewrite as a division
= 3(12+8) Multiply 2 and 4. 19 - 14 Expression.
= 3(20) Add 12 and 8.
= 80 ÷ 5 Evaluate (49+31)
= 60 Multiply 3 and 20. and (19-14)
= 16 Divide 80 by 5.
